What is calabaza?
The mate pumpkin is a vessel related to calabash made from Lagenaria, which, like the Hungarians, was used by the South American Indians for storing liquids and making musical instruments. As this is a product of natural origin, there may be differences in size and color. When used, the mate pumpkin may become discolored. This is a natural process that results from the absorption of yerba mate tea, it does not affect the use value of mate gourd. It is recommended to clean the mate pumpkin after each use and dry it with the open side up. It is a common mistake to dry a mate gourd with its opening facing downwards, so it stays moist longer and its life can be shortened.
